Priya Nair Unit 7C, 402 Willow Bend Drive Raleigh, NC 27606 (919) 555-0132 / priya.nair@example.com 10 July 2026 Crestline Residential Management 1550 Glenwood Avenue, Suite 300 Raleigh, NC 27603 Subject: Notice of Lease Termination — Unit 7C, 402 Willow Bend Drive Dear Crestline Residential Management, Please accept this letter as my formal written notice of termination of the lease for Unit 7C, 402 Willow Bend Drive, Raleigh, NC 27606. My tenancy began on 1 September 2024, and I will vacate the unit on or before 30 September 2026. My lease requires 60 days' written notice of termination, and this letter is intended to satisfy that requirement, being delivered more than 60 days before my move-out date. I am terminating the lease because I have accepted a position with a new employer in Charlotte that begins in October and requires me to relocate. I have enjoyed my time at Willow Bend and intend to leave the unit clean and in good condition. I would like to schedule a joint move-out inspection so we can review the condition of the unit together. I am available on weekday evenings after 6pm, or any time on the weekend of 26–27 September. Please let me know what works for your team, along with your instructions for returning the keys and any move-out procedures I should follow. Kindly return my security deposit, together with an itemized statement of any deductions, to my forwarding address: 218 Camden Row, Apt 5, Charlotte, NC 28203. Please confirm receipt of this notice in writing at the email address above. Thank you for your assistance, and I look forward to completing the move-out smoothly. Sincerely, Priya Nair
Frequently asked questions
- How much notice do I need to give my landlord?
- It depends on your lease and your state or local law. Many leases require 30 or 60 days' written notice, and some jurisdictions set their own minimums for month-to-month tenancies. Check the notice clause in your lease first, and give at least that much notice in writing — earlier is always safer.
- Can I break my lease because of a new job?
- A job relocation is one of the most common reasons tenants leave early, but in most states it is not, by itself, a legal right to terminate without cost. Your best path is usually the lease's early-termination clause (if it has one) or a negotiated exit with your landlord — a professional written notice with clear dates and a cooperative tone makes that negotiation much easier.
- Can I break my lease with military orders?
- Servicemembers who receive qualifying military orders (such as a permanent change of station or deployment) are generally protected by the federal Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, which allows early lease termination under its conditions. If this applies to you, select 'Military orders (SCRA)' and the letter will invoke the Act by name; provide copies of your orders to your landlord as required.
- Will I owe the remaining rent if I leave early?
- Possibly — it depends on your lease, your state's rules, and whether the landlord re-rents the unit. Many states require landlords to make reasonable efforts to re-rent, which limits what you owe, and many leases cap the cost through an early-termination fee. Giving proper written notice and cooperating with showings puts you in the strongest position.
- Should I send the letter by email or certified mail?
- Check your lease — many specify how notices must be delivered. When in doubt, do both: email a PDF for speed, and send a printed copy by certified mail with return receipt so you have proof of delivery and the date notice was given.
- Is this legal advice?
- No. This tool produces a professional termination notice from the details you provide — it is not legal advice. Notice requirements and tenant rights vary significantly by state and lease. Review the letter before sending, and consult a lawyer or local tenant resource for complex situations such as disputes, habitability claims, or potential litigation.
